FIRST AID FOR BIKES

29 November 2009 No Comment

Penny farthingSandwell Primary Care Trust is launching its first ever basic bicycle maintenance course next week (21st November) and is looking for people to take part.

The four week course takes place on Saturday mornings, 9.30 – 11am at Hadley Stadium in Smethwick.
Geoff Cox, Cycling Instructor at Sandwell Primary Care Trust said: “We run a lot of cycling courses for the local community and we have seen demand for a bike maintence course steadily increase.
“Basic Bicycle Maintenance covers the essentials of setting a bike to suit you, as well as dealing with common roadside repairs so you can get back on your bike and home safely.”
At a cost of £20 for six hours of training with qualified instructors, attendees can expect to learn ‘first aid’ for their bikes: Topics include:

• Bike tools and how to use them
• The anatomy and correct fitting of a bicycle
• Adjustment of handlebars, brakes, gears, brake and gear levers, saddle and seat post
• Wheel tyre removal and re-fitting
• Puncture repairs
• Replacing brake pads and blocks
• Splitting and replacing a chain.

General advice on buying a bike, maintaining it, clothing and equipment, and cycling skills will also be on hand.
Geoff added: “With dark nights and winter traffic to contend with, this course is ideal for people who have started riding their bike to and from work.”
