Plans to demolish Sandwell College’s Oldbury Campus

7 January 2010 2 Comments

Sandwell CollegeSANDWELL College’s Oldbury campus is set to be bulldozed and replaced with a new housing estate.

Mar City Developments have lodged a planning application to build 96 houses and 21 apartments at the 2.4 hectare Pound Road site.

The campus, originally the site of Warley College, is set to be consigned to history as staff and pupils will relocate to Sandwell College’s new campus in West Bromwich .

Construction work on the new £77m Spon Lane complex began in December after several delays concerning funding.

Sandwell College Vice-Principal, Scott Upton, said: “We are aware that the proposed purchaser is intending to submit a planning application for residential properties on the Pound Road site.

“Work has already commenced on our brand new £77 million state-of-the-art college campus in West Bromwich.

“The rebuilding project is vital to the future education and training of people in the Black Country.

“The new campus will enable the college to expand and make an important contribution to the economic regeneration of the region.”

The new estate will comprise of 18 two bedroom apartments, 29 two bedroom houses, 43 three bedroom houses, 18 four bedroom houses and six five bedroom houses.

Due to the size of the development there has been a transport assessment, an air quality study, a noise assessment, an ecological evaluation, an arboricultural review and a flood risk strategy undertaken to ensure the estate does not adversely effect the neighbourhood.

A Mar City Developments spokesman said: “The redevelopment of the site will introduce a significant benefit to the local community in terms of the regeneration of a college which is soon to be relocated.

“The site is recognised as a suitable and sustainable location for residential development due to its close proximity to existing services and facilities that can be easily accessed through walking and public transport.”

He added: “It will be in character and context with the local community providing a sense of place and result in a legible environment that is easy to understand.

“It will also offer a diverse choice of accommodation and promote ease of movement for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles.”

Cllr Martin Prestidge said:

“While there is a need for high quality housing, facilities for residents do also have to be provided. I and my colleagues will be looking very carefully at what is proposed.”

Ok so Labour has given permission to demolish Oldbury campus and build on a rare patch of green space in the area. It’s not so long since you allowed Birchfield Park to be built upon. Are there really no other places to build? The Green Belt for instance? I’m certain if this was planned for a middle class area then you wouldn’t dare think about doing it. But hey, we’ve got the M5 at the back of the estate (again, miraculously avoiding leafy suburbs) and the Wolverhampton Road at the front so you might as well cram in a few more folk – they won’t mind.

The actual position is that plaaning pemission has not yet been granted for the development.
I have put forward the views of local residents who have expressed concernabout drainage on the site and potential traffic concerns. I also feel that the developers ought to include extra community provision in this area .
Mr Crowley is free to make representation to the Council about the porposed development.
