I was first elected as a member of Warley County Borough Council in 1971, as a member for the Rounds Green Ward of Oldbury. Local Government re-organisation occurred shortly afterwards and I became a founder Member of Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council in 1973. I left Sandwell Council in 1975 and served on the West Midlands County Council from its inception in 1973 until its abolition in 1986.

Councillor Martin Prestidge has called for action on the increasing problem of dog fouling.He said: ”I am often approached by residents about this problem. Dogs give a great deal of pleasure and companionship to many people, however there is a minor of irresponsible owners who refuse to clean up after their pets.
